Technically this wasn't our first stop in the North Island, we stayed in Wellington on our first night but arrived late and never saw anything at all as we were back on the bus early the next morning.  I did however experience the highest bunk beds in the world here.  At Nomads Capital backpackers, the top bunk was so high, I needed climbing gear to get to my pillow.  And that was Wellington.
Our stop after this was Napier, where me and Helen spent the night in prison!!! Napier Prison, closed in 1993 its now a backpackers place where you can sleep in the cells, eat in the mess hall and shower in the communal facilities.  It was a novel location to stay but the practicalities of it weren't that great.  Quite far out of town, on top of a hill.  Our dorm room was shared with 12.  Count em... 12 people.  Also, it was hot, unbelievably hot.  I couldn't sleep.  Like a sponge being squeezed of its water, I was sweating profusely.  Why this was the case I do not know.  Anyway, that was Napier for us.  Next stop... Rotorua.
