Made a packed lunch and set off on highway 60 up a very windy steep climb,we stopped at Hawkes Lookout. WOW what a view over the bay where we are staying. We next stopped at Ngarue lookout another view of the Abel Tasman national park. We continue to climb for 15 km entered the Golden Bay district then another 15 km drive down into the valley. After another 70 km of driving through Takaka, Collingwood and Puponga we arrived at Cape Farewell and Farewell Spit. Unfortunately the 4 wd bus guided tours were fully booked and as it was our only available day we had to give it a miss. Instead we drove to Cape Farewell on an unmade road with lovely views. We then had a drink at Cape Farewell point, and the view of the spit from the cafe was fantastic. The Spit is 35 km long and made of shifting sand dunes up to 20 metres high. It is a nature reserve so restricted to bus tour companies which drive on the sandy beaches. The spit has a lighthouse at the end.
On our way home we stopped at the Mussel Inn where we sampled a selection of beer and cider. 5 types on draught served in 200 ml glasses, very tasty. Laura gave Dave a helping hand to finish the drinks. We continued home taking a photo of a trainer fence en route but could not stop at the second planned brewery as we would have been over the limit! Cooked Spag Bol for dinner.

Mike & Jan on

Dave & Laura, Hello, Love reading your blog and seeing your fantastic photos. Interesting beer selections and Dave in a familiar pose! Must be strong stuff, almost horizontal!
Christmas Eve here at midday wet and drizzling. Not sure what NZ time but maybe Christmas Day? So HAPPY CHRISTMAS to both of our lovely and intrepid friends.
Lots of love, Mike & Jan xx
