This morning Janet and I got up and headed off to Tongeren Belgium to check out the big Sunday Antique action. This was something my sister had been wanting to do for quite a while and I was game as I wanted to see it too! Every Sunday in Tongeren there are tons of people set up in the street, and some in buildings, having a huge antiques sale. Supposedly there were all manner of things to be found and some really good deals to be had.
The ride to Tongeren took around two hours or so from my sister's house. It was along the same route that we had taken to London for the majority of the part. It was a really nice and sunny morning. We were worried that we were getting a late start as people have been know to be shopping before the sun comes up but there was still tons of stuff when we arrived.
It was pretty darn cool, I wouldn't mind going back some time. There were tons of things to see. You almost need just a whole day to go through it all. The coolest thing was finding these small carved wooden boxes for sale. Most of you do not know this about me, but I like collecting interesting boxes. My sister Deb actually got me started on it by bringing me a few back from some of her trips. Then I started finding some here and there. Well, recently in San Antonio at a thrift store I had bought this really cool wooden carved box with this inlaid design in the top. I bought it because I had never seen one like it before and when I opened it and checked it over it looked pretty old with interesting nails and hinges holding it together. Well while we were walking in Tongeren I found 3 boxes for sale that looked like the same type of box, not exactly the same but the same in style. Well I wouldn't know it until I got home that one of them is almost identical to my box. I think it was pretty darn amazing. My box has no marking as to origin and they are hand carved. I am going to have to do some research now to figure out the origin and stuff. Very cool to find a twin to a San Antonio thrift store purchase so many thousands of miles away. And its not even like there were that many at Tongeren. Very cool!
Neither Janet or I actually ended up buying anything but we had a lot of fun looking around. It was a nice little day trip.
