On our way north to Ecuador we stopped in the surf town of Mancora. Apparently the town has about 9000 residents, but it felt much smaller.  Like many coastal towns in South America, survival is primarily reliant on tourism.  Those there wasn't much in town except for a collection of hostals, restaurants and discos clustered along the Pan-American highway, which serves as the town’s main street.  Despite being a one horse town, Mancora did boast a fantastic hostal.  We had seen Loki’s in most of the major cities of Peru, but had always avoided them because they tended to host crazy parties every night.  However, in Mancora we had no other options so we hesitantly checked into Loki.  Surprisingly, the hostal was fantastic.  Although I am sure there were parties most nights, they weren’t loud and the rooms were so far from the bar that it didn’t bother us.  We ended up spending most of our time in Mancora hanging out at the hostal which was more of a resort than anything.  They had a pool, a restaurant, volleyball courts, hammocks, everything.  Although there weren’t any huge waves, disappointing Fraser who is a pretty big surfer, we attempted to surf.  It was great fun, even though I’m not sure any of us actually stud up on the board.  We also volunteered with our hostal at a local school and spent an afternoon playing with some kids.  All in all we had a lovely time in Mancora.  It was a great place to relax and enjoy the sun.
