Next stop Broome and the famed Cable Beach. Cable Beach is so named as this is where the undersea cable connecting Australia to the outside world came ashore. Cable Beach is now used for camel safaris and is popular with those wishing to take in a sundowner (a drink as the sun sets). It also happens to be a legal free (nude optional) beach.
Broome has a very cosmopolitan population, which partially stems back to its pearling days which relied heavily on Japanese divers. Later in history (WW2) the Japanese made several bombing raids on Broome causing loss of lives and severe damage to Australian planes.
