We left Byron Bay hung over and sad. It was a really great town and we all had a blast. Luckily, the drive to Coolangatta was a short one; only about an hour. Coolangatta is a surf town that has arguably the best waves in Australia. I know I have said that before, but they hold the Quicksilver/Roxy Pro Surfing Competition here every year, so the waves must be decent for surfing. Let me tell you they are. Some of the waves scared the hell out of me. I would have died. However, there were some pros there surfing and they made it look easy. Because of this two week, yearly event, Coolangatta has become somewhat commercialized. Skyscrapers line the beaches and shops and restaurants plague the streets of this tiny city. However, it was still better than Surfers Paradise (I will get to this in my next entry). We stayed in a YHA right next to the airport. That was fun to try and sleep. However, the hostel did have a ping pong table. The first night we were there consisted of 7 hours of ping pong. There were some intense games. I am not quite Forest Gump level, but I'm getting there. We all got pretty good towards the end.
The next day was a beach day. It was a gorgeous day out and the waves were huge. Surf boards were too expensive to rent, so we just had to make due. Body surfing time! This was a terrible idea. The waves threw us around like an eighth grader in the NFL. We bashed our heads, backs, and shoulders. Why did we keep doing it? Because as much as it hurt, at the same time it was fun as hell. At about lunch time, we dragged ourselves out of the water, broken and beaten, and relaxed by the ping pong table. It was my Dad's birthday, so I had to make a phone call. I called him and talked to him for a little while and then hung up. I went back in and sat down and as my ass hit the seat I realized I didn't actually wish him a happy birthday. I got change from Mitch and ran back out to the pay phone and made a second call. I really need to stop drinking so much. I'm losing my mind. Anyway, the rest of the day was just playing ping pong and basketball. At night, we picked up some boxed wine and all sat around the table and talked. We then tried to go to a bar, which was a short walk from the hostel. It was a pilot's bar and those are usually fun. It was closed. Damn. Back to the hostel! From there we just hung out and met some English, Canadian, and a girl from New Zealand. I got some good tips from her on what to see and where to go. After that, it was bed time for it was surfers tomorrow!
