A very, very early start to catcth the ferryThe Irish Sea was as flat as millpond once again and the ferry was relatively empty so there was plenty of space for everyone to loll. A three hour power nap and and I awoke to see North Wales looking at me thro the window. More accurately we were arriving in Angleseea at Holyhead.A quick disembarcation and we were soon crossing the Menai Straight and onto the mainland.
I have good memories of North Wales having spent two holidays cycling in the area with a crowd of mates from the cycling club. In reality it was more like a stage race but with the handicap of the weight of your luggage. We were young then and very competitive.
The coach took us up Llanberis Pass and while fearless leader was telling us the story of the underground reservoir which has been dug inside the mountain to run a power station, I was seeing those young guys toiling up the pass dreaming they were riding in the Tour de France.
Such is life.
We rolled right on to Betwys-y-coed which although I had been there before I could not remember although it cannot have changed much over the years except to turn it's shops into tea rooms and souvenir emporiums.
On reflection we did not visit Wales on either occasion as much as pass through it hurriedly on our way to somewhere else. Swiftly we were over the border into England and in the ancient Roman town of Chester. I have to fess up at this point that prior to leaving UK as a young fella I had never been further north than Birmingham so the rest of tis trip was going to be new territory.
Chester has a city wall which seemed to be largely intact and has an impressive Cathedral

Dave Brown on

Bert & Carol. Like you before I left I think I went as far north as Molineaux, Wolves home ground. So when we got there in about 1990 we were also very imptressed with Chester. Very Elizabethan as I rememver with blackened wood inserts in the buildings. Poor description but you know what I mean. I remember a bookshop near the city gate where we loaded up with 2nd hand books. We were touring in a small motor home at the time.
CU, Enjoy
