Where I stayed
After Drayton Manor Swing bridge
My self appointed task in the morning is to seek out somewhere to buy a daily newspaper. This has taken me on some amazing walks and is a real test of my memory. Some of you reading this will know what my sense of direction is like. Today's exercise was typical. I left the boat around 6.45, Bryan was just about awake enough to ask the time. The nearest village boasting a shop was Curdworth, that we came through yesterday. The journey involved walking uphill along the towpath past the locks, past some ongoing canal works, past an elusive water point that we couldn't find yesterday, through a tunnel and up onto the road going over the bridge and across the A4097. That was the easy bit. Finding the small post office/shop was a little more difficult but I got there in the end. Then retracing my steps back to the boat for a well earned breakfast
After breakfast we set off, not intending to get anywhere in particular. After the last lock, Bryan did suggest stopping and in retrospect I wish we did. There was nowhere really suitable to stop after that for quite a while. Lots of trees and a brick bank which would mean banging mooring pins in. When we did come upon a small patch with piling at the bank it was already occupied. We wanted to stop before Fazeley otherwise it would have meant going on even further to find a nice spot and the day was rather hot by now. We settled for a spot about a mile before the junction with piling and a few trees AND a road running along the off side of the canal. It's a bit noisy at the moment but I hope it will be quieter after the working community have gone home.
Having moored, we had a call from a friend who works in this area and we are going to meet up with him tomorrow morning. So that's a bonus. Looking forward to meeting Craig tomorrow.
