BULA! I have now finished my teaching placement. I had a fantastic time in Fiji and really enjoyed teaching in my school, experiencing village life and learning a lot about myself too.

The first few weeks were very hard as I had my first battle against homesickness as I had never been away from home for so long before, lots of weird bugs/creatures were around and I felt isolated with a bit of a language barrier. However, after remembering that you get what you give I threw myself into things more and got a good response. I was soon chatting and laughing with the locals, trying out new foods and having fun with my class.

I've had many messages from friends I made in Fiji since my return home, some even from people I never met or parents of my pupils who I never met. I still keep in touch with many. They all offered kind wishes of support and thanked me for what I did. Though it's me who should be doing the thanking. The people I met helped make my time there as good as it was. My experience in Fiji made me open my eyes up to the world. The cliche of travel broadens the mind is true. I saw people with less than myself so happy and cheerful. You only have to see all the photos/videos of the smiling children to see this. I was never a particularly materialistic person before I left but I'm even less so now. And things that used to be problematic at home now seem trivial. I've realised there are other people in the world who live differently but are just as happy, or more so. My experience in Fiji made me become more open minded, confident, wanting to experience more countries/cultures and take a different perspective on life. I hope to return one day to see my village, host family and see how the children I taught are getting on.

I mentioned in my last blog my ongoing problem with ants constantly eating my food in my room - my 'moat' idea worked very well (photo of it in photos).

I managed to get to see a bit of Hong Kong too on my journey home as the Fijian air hostesses took me through some of it. I managed to get 9hrs there amongst my two flight journeys of 22hrs. We went down streets of markets which all began to look the same after a while. They were selling everything - phones, laptops, clothes, handbags, weird foods. When Denise, one of the air stewardesses asked me what I wanted to eat - Indian, Pizza, McDonald's, I replied an authentic Chinese would be best suited seen as I was in Hong Kong, very authentic.

Hong Kong had the same sort of bustle as London but the standard of living seemed to fluctuate from one extreme to the other. In one part there were extremely clean, smooth trains, fancy apartments and posh shopping malls with top designer shops, and in the other part there were crowded streets of market stands, infront of dirty high-rise bulidings with washing hanging outside in which whole families live in tiny flats. Things to buy in Hong Kong were really cheap for me - with an exchange rate of 12:1 it was great. Even the Fijian ladies found it cheap for them.

This is the end of my adventures abroad for now. I will definitely travel more in the future and experience more cultures around the world, as well as revisiting Fiji. My next venture will either be during the uni holidays or after uni. Where, I don't know yet.

I'll be using this blog again to chart my next foreign experience so keep an eye out on this travel blog......

I hope you've enjoyed following my time in in Fiji :-)
Thanks for all the messages and comments whilst I was away.

Take a look at all the videos - some are of me showing around my school/house and others are just generally of having fun with the kids. And there are some stunning photos of the scenery too. If you haven't already, take a look at my previous blogs' photos too.

Time for me to start saving for the next adventure and eventually the world....

Enjoy

For now, Moce
