So from Hong Kong, I flew down to bangkok, spent a night in Bangkok with Sue (a brilliant Kiwi teaching here) then the next morning flew down to Surat Thani. The plane was met with buses at the airport to ferry the plane load (seriously, just about the whole plane was on its way to the full moon party) to the docks, then we got a ferry over to the party island (Im not making things up here) of Koh Pha Ngan.
It was a long day.. I hadnt changed my cellphone (watch) to thai time, so was still running on China time, got up and did everything an hour earlier than I needed to, while stressing I was actually late because th clock under Sue's TV is 2 hours fast! All very confusing, but of course it all worked out perfectly, as it tends to do. The boat ride was a bumpy one, Im sure some people turned a bit green, it was funny watching people wandring about, wethought they had been drinking, but it turned out when we got up to go outside that the boat was that bumpy.. I met some lovely folk travelling south who I hung out with and bumped into later in the piece which was all very nice.
I went down to Koh pha Ngan to meet up with Mike who I travelled with in Cambodia for a bit and to do the full moon party before I left south east asia (Last time i was sick if y'all recall..). I bumped into Mike after having dinner with a new friend (a lovely french guy named Yann who I ended up sharing a room with on the first night to save costs - arriving on the island the night before the main tourist pull with no room booked was a gamble and a costly gamble at that but meh..sharing worked out nicely) - I knew it would work out that way rather than trying to come up with a meeting place, we'd randomly find each other..
So we met, and went to the beach for a drink..After not doing a whole lot of drinking in China, the buckets of Thailand were a familiar (and rather intoxicating friend), and the pre-full-moon -party night (I was planning on having a relatively quiet one) turned out to be a fanastically fun one, full of drinking and dancing on the beach (I do so enjoy the south of Thailand!) and a very ate one at that, I danced till after the sun had come up, and struggled to find my way back home in the light of day (we had arrived after dark, and the town of Had Rin really changes in the light and the dark!!) and fell into bed around 7 - 7.30..Yann was already dead to the world in the other bed, I set my alarm for 10.45 and crashed right out.
The alarm went off, I woke Yann, we checked out and made our way to Mikes place just down the road..I was quite hungover at this point in time, hadnt bothered with the getting dressed side of things as I knew I was going back to sleep once I got to Mikes, and had to get yann to take a photo because it was all just too hilarious for words!! Even funnier was the guy who had crashed out on the bench outside our room..goodness only knows what his story was, he was there when I had gotten in that morning, but I had since forgotten about him! He was still there though, sleeping it all off..Yann thought it was just hilarious!
We slowly got over the alcohol from the night before, and geared ourselves for the full moon party that night. Yann checked into a brilliant room in the same gusthousey place as mike, which was more ofa house than a room, he had a huge balcony, a beautiful bedroom and bathroom and it was all lovely.. We decided it was a great place for a pre-drinks do, and when we went down to the 7/11 to buy the supplies for home made buckets, we bumped into a friend of mikes and a friend of hers and so on and went home with a lovely wee group for drinks at Yanns bachelor Pad.
Im not even going to try talk about the party itself..it was great fun, a billion people on a big stretch of beach dotted with bars playing diferent types of music, you wander down the beach and stop when you want to dance to that kind of music and then move on when you want something new! It was a very very interesting night and for a long while I think i will be recalling different aspects of the craziness!! I ended up scrounging the beach for new jandals (I had ditched relatively early on in the piece my odd pair I had scrounged that morning after the night before), I had a pleasantly odd pair - a blue havianna and a straw coloured number with shells lining the straps (probably infested with verucas no less!) when half an hour after picking up little blue, I found its pair! same size, same colour, same design!! I was stoked beyond stoked!! Following the shoe scrounging (we were done with partying but not ready to sleep) we decided to go eat, and I ended up helping a very drunken Thai girl while Mike kept her Irish man friend occupied..it was a beautiful thing but really killed the bucket buzz and we ended up crashing soon after this was all over.
The hangover was an interesting one too!! For Mike it lasted two or three days..Mine wasnt quite so bad, but I had no voice, so when we ventured out for food and water andbumped into people who wanted to talk, poor Mike was stuck with the conversational aspects (which he really couldn handle) cos I quite frankly wasnt making a noise! By the third day we were back on the beach with a beer in our hands, but I still had very little voice. We decided we needed to get off that island, but didnt make it off for another few days..in that time I got sunburnt, drank a bit, had a massage, did some shopping, but all in all, really achieved very little.
I was relieved to be on the bus back to Bangkok a week after arriving on the island, I have done my stint in the south I think, and I was NOT going to get stuck on Koh Phi Phi again!!
