From Kuala Lumpur, we decided to work our way North East into central Malaysia, with our goal to reach the Taman Negara National Park.   After checking out of our ghetto hostel early in the morning, we grabbed the LRT to the bus terminal and boarded our bus.  Four and a half hours later, we arrived in Jerantut from which we had to arrange our onward travel to the park.   Given the high volume of backpackers seeking a way to the park, we were immediately approached with offers of transport.  Our decision was to take a 3 hour boat ride up the Tembeling river.

Although the boat was a fairly uncomfortable wooden longboat, having only thin cushions as seats, a crudely built metal canopy overhead, and powered by a 40 HP outboard motor, the ride was to be filled with incredible scenery, and the cool air coming at us in the open boat was a nice reprieve from the oppressive heat.   With only a few stops to refuel from jerry cans, we sailed smoothly upstream until we had finally arrived in the settlement of Kuala Tahan, where we would find our accommodations in a quaint 'chalet' with twin beds, en-suite shower/toilet (Geckos and Frogs included), and thankfully, a working Air Conditioner.  Cost: Approximately $17 / night.

After finding ourselves a decent dinner on one of the many riverside floating restaurants, we wandered around Kuala Tahan, to find that it is a "dry" settlement (A beer can be bought at the 'international standard' hotel, but, not really worth the cost), and that there really wasn't much life to the place.   As such, we retired for the night, with plans to awaken early and make use of the many hiking trails that wind throughout the park.
