I'm somewhere in the maze that is Chungking Mansion in Kowloon, trying to remember the highlights of my trip so far. My friend Erica and I started our three weeks together by racing from the Hong Kong airport to see the laser show, less dramatic than we expected, but a good introduction to this city nonetheless! In the past three days, we have walked Nathan Road up and down, had high tea at the Peninsula Hotel, eaten dim sum, seen more silk kimonos than we ever imagined (had to buy a couple, of course), traveled to the giant Buddha on Lantau Island, and wound our way through the maze of alleys of a fishing village on stilts. One memorable afternoon was spent simply sitting at a sidewalk bar in Sheung Wan, the old part of Hong Kong, sipping beers with the locals and watching life go by.
Tomorrow we are off to Singapore for two days. I can honestly say Hong Kong has been a nice surprise, and I would come back again, if only to have the Won Ton soup in a tiny side street restaurant we found today! The smells, sounds and sights of this city have left me wanting more. One last treat for ourselves will be the foot/hand/head massage combo we had two days ago and are determined to reward ourselves with a second time. Ahhh........Hong Kong. So far a wonderful introduction to my first trip to Asia.
