Where I stayed
What I did
We flew into Durango's little airport from a friend's wedding in Atlanta, GA by way of DIA (aka Denver International Airport).
The highlights of our trip were staying at Country Sunshine B&B and zip-lining through the nearby forest.
At Country Sunshine, we stayed in the Aspen Room and also really enjoyed the hot tub under the stars! Walter and Jody were such gracious hosts and we still talk about Walter's breakfasts on the deck to this day - especially the fresh fruit and yogurt parfaits that we have recreated at home with somewhat limited success!
The first great part of this adventure was traveling by train to the site, which is the only way to get there besides private helicopter. (No, you really cannot drive to the resort!) I remember taking the Durango-Silverton Railroad as a kid and Jim's grandfather used to work as a conductor (on another line), so we enjoyed this thoroughly! The only snafu was that if you get on at the Rockwood stop and off at the zip line, you miss most of the scenery you would have seen if you had been able to take the train for the entire line. :(
Tree Soaring was (and at publishing time, still is) rated TripAdvisor.com's #1 thing to do in Durango, and it was every bit as fun as it looks! I don't have a fear of heights but it was a little nerve-wracking to take that first step off the platform, even for me. But then you get over that and the rest of the day is one long zip after another! And the food was fantastic! We got sprinkled on and even had to wait out a short bout of lightning, but overall this was one of the most fun vacation activities ever!!!!!!
