Day 70 Sun 8th Jan 2006
Day Two of our Delhi trip
I had ordered a taxi for 10 this morning and Din would not get up so I had to cancel it. She had been in bed since yesterday afternoon and had had plenty of rest, so I managed to get her up and ready for about midday, we had to get another taxi to take us around Delhi. We had breakfast at the hotel, Sim had eggs and Din had a jam sandwich. We drove from New Delhi to Old Delhi, on the way we passed the Chor Bazaar, it's a local Sunday market that takes place on the pavements outside the normal shops, these shops are closed on Sunday. We drove past the Jama Masjid, it's the biggest Mosque in Delhi, we would have stopped off but we had to make up for lost time. Then we drove to the Red Fort, again due to time constraints and the fact that major walking was involved we just saw it from the outside. Then we went to the Raj Ghat, this is the memorial park for Mahatma Gandhi, we got out here and had a look around, Din was feeling much better by this point. After this we drove to the Lotus Temple, it's the house of worship for the Baha 'l'Allah, we had a look around the visitors centre first, it was very well laid out and full of useful information, but Din just wanted out of there, she is too young to appreciate all that stuff, but Sim was very interested in the whole thing. We went to visit the temple itself and a prayer was going to take place as we entered the temple so we listened to it before leaving. It was a very beautiful place and I would love to have spent more time there. Next stop was the Qutb Minar, this was built by one of the Mogul rulers so he could keep an eye on he's wives (or something like that). After this we ate at a nearby restaurant, the food was a bit nasty, Din didn't eat much and Sim and me just had a bit. As we drove back towards New Delhi we went past a Gurdwara, I got the driver to pull over and we went in to 'matha tekh'. We drove past the houses of Parliament and the Prime Ministers residence on the way back to the hotel. We got back for around 6.30, we decided to go out to Pizza Hut to eat because Din said she wanted Pizza and as she hadn't eaten much lunch, I thought she needed to eat what she WANTED to eat. When we got there she didn't even eat that, she had a little bit but nowhere near as much as she should have. It's really hard to see her like that, I keep thinking how can she get through the day with the little amount of food she eats? Any way we got back to the hotel and I had asked the agent to see if he could get return tickets for tomorrow, he told me Shtabdi tickets were not available but there was another train but it was like some dodgy local train. After deliberating with the girls we decided to stay and go to Agra in the morning, we were originally thinking about a bus trip but in the end I booked a taxi to take us, it cost's a lot more but then it's more convenient, with Din feeling the way she is, it's going to be the best way. When we got back to the room we found a new guest was staying with us, I saw a mouse run across the room and hide behind the a cupboard, I rang reception and they sent two guy's up to get rid of it. Luckily the girls didn't see it, if they had done I don't think we would still be here now! By the way Simran made notes on everywhere we visited today, that's how I knew where we had been, thanks Sim.
