Day 63 Sun 1st Jan 2006
New Years Day
Here we go again! Another month or so of writing the wrong year at the end of the date...
We had a wedding to attend today, a guy from Pind was getting married and his dad came over to the house to invite us especially, now I remember seeing the dad over the years in the Pind and when he came to the house the other day I was quite taken back by how aged he was looking, I suppose that's what happens when you graft all your life! The family are not very well off so it wasn't one of these lavish affairs, just simple, and well, kind of nice really!
After our late night I got up a bit too late to go with the rest of the Baraat, so Me, Soma and Kuljit (spa from Pind, see pic) went about 11.30ish in Kuljit's car. We were supposed to go on the bullet (just me and soma) but Soma fell off it this morning and broke the clutch, the Larry was trying to turn it around and it just fell over, quite funny really! There was a big hoo haa at the wedding because a suitcase containing all the brides clothes and gold jewellery was stolen from the boot of car, it was quite sad for it to happen to a family that didn't have much in the first place, it's not like they are going to get any insurance payout.
The high light of the day was seeing GURDAS MANN (the number one Punjabi singer of all time, more commonly know in Punjab as Baba) live on stage in a Pind School Playground, proper Akkara style! When we were going to the wedding we past Shankar, the Pind where K.S.Makhan is from. We saw them setting up the stage and found out later that Makhan had invited Baba to perform for a party he was holding. We were told it was going to be an evening thing and thought we would catch the show on the way home, as it was open to the public. When we came back from the wedding we past Shakar around 4.30, to my disappointment people were already leaving, so the show was nearly over. Kuljit said he didn't want to see the show and went home me and Soma stopped to see the last few songs. Now I was gutted to have missed most of the show but out of the few songs he sang, one of them was 'Bas Rehan De' from the new album. That is my favourite song on the album and fast making it into my list of all time fav's, right up there with 'Challa' and 'Peer Tere Chaan Di'. It's a super hit in Punjab already, 10 days after it's release! That was the best start to the New Year I could have possibly asked for, he truly is the Baba of Punjabi music.
When the show was over we walked towards Nakodar for about half an hour before Soma gave up and flagged down a bus, we used a number of different modes of transport today. After Soma fell off the Bullet we got a lift into Nakodar from Gagan in his taxi, then we got a rickshaw to where Kuljit was, we took his car to the wedding, walked to Nakodar and finally caught two busses home. That looks to me like it might be a sign of things to come.
2006 here I come....
