Day 58 Tue 27th Dec 2005
Missions in Jalandhar
Jag has asked me to look into getting some Cortey (Punjabi shirts) for the Bhangra group so today I went to Jalandhar to have a look at sorting it out. When I say some there's actually 140 of them so I need to get it sorted out quick time. I went with Soma on the bus and we didn't leave till about midday, this seems to be a reoccurring pattern. I have had a lot of trouble sleeping over the past few months, so for everyone who said I was looking ill that's probably one of the reasons why. I have been averaging around 5-6 hours on a good night and 0 hours on a bad one, but recently I can't get my ass out of bed (yep the cold), it's not that I am sleeping more just kind of resting my eyes (yeah right!) Anyway this means that I've been crawling out of bed about 11.30 for the past few days. Hey I'm on holiday so what the hell! Back to Jalandhar, I was hoping to see the girls but they were out and about so our paths didn't cross (they might as well be back home). I went to our relatives shop where I usually get clothes made up and uncle Ashwani sorted out the Cortey, sampling is underway and this time next week I should have a size set of samples, this is India so I won't hold my breath but we'll see what happens. I told him about the fine and asked where I need to go to pay it, he just took the payment slip off me and said he will send someone down there and sort it out, cool!
When we got home it was dark and there were no lights on at home, now this is not unusual because the electric has a habit of switching itself on and off as it wishes (its an Indian thing!). What was unusual was it was only our house that had no electric. When we got in Thai (Soma's mum) told us that during the day a crow had sat on the electric line outside the house and it sparked up, she didn't think it as serious but obviously something was wrong. I thought that was it till the morning, no light and more importantly no heater, but Soma got the village sparky (electrician) out and he got on a ladder and checked out the wiring. It turned out the live wire had a join in it that had been disturbed (I was still in shock that this guy came out in the middle of the night to have a look at this thing without any tools, torch or even switching the supply off from behind). He got a piece of wire from god knows where and joined it all back up, all of this for 20 rupees and a cup of tea, not bad hey! Oh 20 rupees is about 25pence. This means I have my heater on tonight, thank god!
