Day 28 Tue 18th Oct 2005
Day 1 with Ubhi
We went to pick up Ubhi this morning (Me, Soma and Gagan), we met up with him at The Satguru Partap Singh Apollo Hospital. The hospital was built by Ubhi's Satguru Ji (religious leader), they raised over 10 Million rupees to have the hospital built, and it was all privately funded. The hospital has been open only a few months and we got a VIP tour of it! I must say it was a very impressive place, no expense has been spared and they have all the state of the art equipment there. It's reassuring to see that amongst all the madness in Punjab (especially Ludiana, check out pic of the traffic!!!) that some people are taking positive steps for the future. After our guided tour we headed for Jalandhar, it was around lunchtime when we got there so we headed for Pizza Hut. I needed to check up on my e-mail and so did Ubhi so we went to Web-world (the only REAL broadband internet cafes in India). The amount of e-mails I am receiving from friends back home has been steadily declining over the past few weeks, I guess it's a case of 'out of sight, out of mind'. Had some nice e-mails from family (thanks, keep them coming). I had to get a new mobile chip and Ubhi wanted a top-up so we went to Model Town next, it's like the local hangout for the youth of Jalandhar so I fitted right in!!!. The place was heaving, its Carva Chauth in a couple of days and all the women were out getting Mendhi (henna) put on there hands, it was still daylight when we got there and there were not many people around, as soon as the sunset they all came out to play!
After Model Town we went to Pritvi's Planet, this place has a bowling alley, pool tables, arcade games, a bar, a restaurant and a fast food joint all rolled into one. It's been open around 4-5 years now and its still the best place to go in Jalandhar (although the alley needs looking at!). We ate food there and left for pind around 10pm, an hour later we were home. Its been a long day (again), Its good having Ubhi around but he is quite anxious to get back to his wife and kids in Delhi, he is leaving for Delhi on Friday morning so we only have a couple of days. Not much you can do in 2 days but we have planned to go to the Wagha Border (India & Pakistan border) tomorrow and then Chandigarh on Thursday.
