We travelled overnight by coach from Almaty, Kazakhstan. I don't speak Russian so was relying on russian speaking family for most things! There's very few english speakers in this part of the world so not easy to get by without a translator/guide. Issyk Kul is a beautiful place, ringed by mountains it's a unique spot. The locals are very friendly, hospitality was great and it's possible to hire a local driver to go on day trips. No westerners were sighted in the 10 days or so we were here but there are lots of kazakh holidaymakers in the resorts along the coast. Highlight was probably fishing with nomads up in the hills above the lake and of course the family barbeques.
