We picked up the rental car and set off through the San Francisco streets carefully. Another 'Off Piste' had been decided and we headed north, over the Golden Gate Bridge which was shrouded in the famous San Francisco Bay mist. As we cleared the city we drove through the rolling Sacramento valley with enormous vineyards extending to the skyline in the sunshine. Classic California.

The highway gave us a good steady run, especially with the 'warp drive' selected. Speed limits were 55 / 65 mph and there were warning signs ' Speed is enforced by aircraft'. Great , not only do you have to watch the road but also look out for some F15 on a low level run if you stray over the limit!!!  We did not see any 'aircraft' but we did see several "Highway Patrol" cars and they are still all black with white doors. I wonder if Broderick Crawford has retired yet ? If you remember him then you're showing both our ages !!

We progressed through the Sonoma, Mendocino and then Humboldts counties until at night we found a small motel in Eureka. Listen, its true - I couldn't dream up half of these place names!! Why - I wanted to see some of the tallest trees on earth - the California Redwoods.
