This is where I lived in my early phase in Thailand, far from the beaches, but the center of the handicrafts industry, my livelihood and raison de voyager all those years. A lot has been written about Chiang Mai and much more could be certainly, but the bottom line for me is that it was much nicer before the gold rush.  1998 was the transition time, complete with growing pains, as ChiangMai made the transition from small town to big city, a trend that accelerated rapidly under local boy HM (I mean PM) Taksin's turn of government.
