One month and over 3,600 miles into our journey and we seem to be bogged down in Texas. Now I know the inspiration for the song about miles and miles of Texas. I saw a card today with the verse "the sun has riz, the sun has set, and here I is, in Texas yet!" Zoobley and I are learning that you just can't see and do everything that looks interesting so we have decided to head for Big Bend National Park and then get out of the Lone Star state and give the other forty-nine a look.

After doing laundry and updating our travelogue, we headed northwest along the Mexican Border making it as far as Del Rio just in time for a quick run before the sun set over the desert. The state park to the west of Del Rio was full so we opted for a more rustic campground at Amistad Lake National Recreation Area just on the western city limits of Del Rio.

Unlike most of the West Texas towns we have visited so far where most faces seem to be Hispanic, Del Rio has a noticeable Anglo cowboy flair. The landscape between Laredo and Del Rio was reminiscent of the rolling desert scrub that served as background to the old black and white western movies with the exception of a short stretch around Eagle Pass which seemed uncharacteristically fertile as evidenced by acre after acre of pecan orchards.
