I read recently of a couple who booked their travel to China through their travel agent. And another pair who used a popular China site to find a hotel.
Both reported bad experiences.
The first couple found their 4-star hotel to be a dump. It was unclear, poorly located, and had few of the features which the travel agent had promised. After one night, the holiday makers called the travel agent, and after a few hours, managed to get into another hotel in the same city. Not a bad outcome.
The second pair, who used a Chinese website, also found their hotel was not up to expectations. But they couldn't do anything about it. They had already booked and paid their money before they discovered that half the things in the room didn't work, or were dirty.
The lesson from this:
it pays to check out a hotel first.
But how, you ask?
Well, there's a new independent website which had ratings and reviews of hotels in China. Hotel Foo was just launched recently, but already it has thousands of reviews in English of hotels throughout China. Check it out at http://www.hotelfoo.com/
The good thing about Hotel Foo is that it brings in reviews and ratings from travelers from a variety of sites. It also wants your reviews and ratings.
What's more, you can then book your hotel after reading recent comments from travelers like you. Have a look http://www.hotelfoo.com/
