I came across this sad story today, about a man who got a rebuke from the judge not only over his excessive drinking, but also his choice of drink.
He was spending more than $900US a month on his drinking - enough to buy 2,500 stubbies or small bottles. The construction worker was drowning his sorrows after breaking up with his partner of five year. He lived in the Northern Territories, croc country, and had sired four children, and he narrowly avoided going to jail for his latest drinking offence - his 7th drink-driving crime - but in sentencing Michael Leary (his real name) the judge did have this to say:
"this is poor judgement on two counts there -- drinking that much and drinking Melbourne Bitter," magistrate Vince Luppino was quoted as saying - referring to VB, a drink favoured by some Australians.
