Where I stayed
Most of us were leaving Cairns and flying to the Gold Coast on the same flight. We got up early and hand a 2-hour flight to Gold Coast, Queensland. A bus picked us up at the airport and brought us to Bond University. I was assigned to live in a housing accommodation called Varsity Shores. I did not know what to expect. To my surprise I was assigned to live in a house with 6 other girls that are all from the US. I have my own room with my own bathroom, a large closet, a queen sized bed, and a small balcony. We all share a garage, our own laundry room, a fully furnished living room, a backyard, and a kitchen with all kitchen utensils provided. We are three houses down from the exercise room and lap pool and a block away is a BBQ area and a larger community pool. Our house is in a gated area and it is only a five-minute walk from campus. I absolutely love it! Once we got settled in we went on campus and got some information about the rest of the week. From Monday to Friday we didn't have class and it is declared zero week or orientation week. It is a time to check in, get your class schedule organized, explore the area, and to attend the events they plan on campus in order to get to know people. So that night my roommates and I went to Bond’s on campus toga party, which was hosted at the campus tavern. It is weird that everyone who is enrolled in college can drink so they have drinking sponsored events. It was fun and I met some new people.
From Tuesday the 12th to Sunday the 17th I did a lot of things through the school but also got my room organized and I got all situated in my house. On campus they had a hypnotist come on Tuesday night, Wednesday they threw a BBQ and pool party during the day and at night we went to a fancy International Cuisine Dinner, Thursday night was their annual Tight 'n’ Bright 80s party at Don’s Tavern (the campus bar)
On to a more boring subject: academics. I got checked in and I am now fully enrolled at Bond University for the semester. I got my class schedule. I am taking four classes: Drugs and Behavior, Human Biology, Australian History, and Australian Sport in the Modern Era. I am required every week to go to a large 2-hour lecture and also attend a separate 1-hour tutorial with only 14-20 students. It should be an interesting semester as it is a very different education system than the US. with time to fit traveling in. I am happy to say that I don’t have any classes on Wednesday or Friday. I am planning on traveling over the weekends and I may have to miss a few classes along the way to fit it all in (bummer). I am talking with some of my friends and within the next few weeks we are going to plan where we all want to travel to. I am very excited about the entire semester!
Classes start on Monday the 18th. I will post another blog once I have some interesting things to fill you all in on!
