November 4, 2009

"Hectic Lima" as lonely planet would call it.  Lets just say they weren't kidding!!!  It was a quick ride today to start the tour off but it wasn't without its excitment.  The first 10 miles or so getting out of Lima was heavy traffic with the terrible smell of garbage and smog.  It was a good start for the two newbs!  But we survived it and thank goodness we all got the marathon tires cause we ran over soo much glass and other crazy stuff.  It was exciting and draining to say the least.  Steve thought we were going to die but it wasn't that bad, hes just a wimp, haha.  Once we escaped Lima it got much better and steve just told me, "he didn't feel like he was going to die."  It was actually quite enjoyable finally being on the bike again and seeing a new country.  The desert here is like nothing i have ever seen before, the sand dunes/mountains are massive and the towns are built up the entire sides of the mountains.  Its a bit of a culture shock to see the houses though, they are a bit rough.  All the people we have talked to, or should i say brett talked to, have been very nice though.
After about 17 miles or so we finally hit the panamerican highway which has a nice shoulder so far.  We flew throw the 7 kms we were on it till we came to the town we are staying at now, Ancon.
Its a really nice town and the beach area is very nice and quiet.  After we hung out at the beach for a little we started looking for a place to stay and we finally found one for 20 soles(about $7) each and we all had to get our own rooms.  The only problem was i realized i lost my debit card somewhere back in Lima.  I should have figured something stupid would have happened to me on this trip.  Luckily i was able to use skype and call my bank to cancel it right away and no transactions were made either, so thats good atleast.  I have another old debit card that i will be able to use until my mom transfers my last check into the old account.  Thank goodness for 1 soles per hour internet cafes.  They are all over the place around here, its crazy.  After i took care of that we all went to dinner at a little cafe down the road and got our first peruvian meal.  chicken sandwhiches, fried chicken, and cut up hot dogs and chicken on fries. Haha, it was only $2 each so we can't complain.  Brett and I also shared an especial drink that we didn't mean to order.  It could be bad news for us tomorrow but it sure was good tonight.  We're gonna get sick at some point in this trip so we might as well get it out of the way, right?
Oh and one other thing that we arent too proud of is we got our butt whooped about 5 times to 3 kids at soccer.  we brought a mini ball with so we asked if they wanted to play. They were good and they were probably only 14.  Those 3 national titles for brett didn't even help when he had steve and i as teamates, Its been about 3 years since i touched a ball.  It was a great time though and hopefully we can get some more games going throughout the trip.  We need to get in shape for them first, i don't think we are going to sweet nearly as much riding our bikes as we did playing tonight!  Tomorrow, Norte.

Peace, Love, and futball
