Day 43 - October 29

Brian and I ended up taking a day off in Lompoc yesterday since we needed to take one before L.A.  There wasn't much of a "downtown", but visiting the bike shop(Brian broke a spoke), wasting time at the library, and going to the chinese buffet was just enough to keep brian and I happy.

We started the day off around 9 this morning with an uphill right off the bat.  It wasn't hard, just long and
gradual - we spent our first hour and a half working our way up to a much more impressive downhill than the uphill had been.  We arrived at the campground we had planned on staying at, but since the photographer we had met in morro bay told us it would be easy to camp on the beach just a few miles south, we decided to keep going.  Now, I'm not so sure how easy it looks to get over the railroad tracks and down the cliffs to the small stretches of sand in order to camp while your driving in your car, but from a bicyclist's view we could tell it was going to be pretty hard, if not impossible to accomplish that feat.  Having no cash, and the fact that it was only noon, gave us reason to push on and here we are just past santa barbara leaving us a 66 mile day.

The riding was easy and since today was our last major climb, that's what we're expecting for most of the ride from here on out.  We got into Santa Barbara and it was hello southern california - the california you picture from the movies.  There were palm trees just everywhere and people laying on the beach and playing volley ball and people on bikes...most of them homeless, but that's beside the point.  We deffinitely saw the most crazies of all the towns we've been through.  We couldn't believe all the people just laying around in the grass and on the beach with their bicycles and garbage bags of aluminum cans...yes we are in southern california.

Now we find ourselves at the library before going to camp for the night.
