Day 37 and 38 - October 23 and 24

We woke up at 7 to two nice surprises - it was quite warm for being so early in the morning and the highway had been closed just a few miles north of where we stopped to camp because of the fire and rocks falling onto the road.   I guess Brian and I can't say we never get lucky.  We heard from several people that the road will probably be closed a few days or at least until they get the fire out.  who knows how long that could be since I read an update at the campground that it started almost a month ago.  Hardly any traffic and beautiful views.  The day was looking up, except for the fact that we still didn't have any oatmeal for breakfast.

We made our way into another one of the "towns" through Big Sur.  More like a gas station, a restuarant, a hotel, and a general store all connected together.  We waited until the general store opened, got ourselves some muffins, and chips to hold us over along with some hamburger buns we still had left over.

There were two big climbs right after we stopped, but the fact that there was hardly any traffic really didn't give any room for complaining.  The downhills were fun and eventually the road flattened out.  It felt like we were in the desert when we stopped to take a break to watch some elephant seals and eat our sad lunch in the only patch of shade we could find.

The streak of expensive grocceries was over when we finished the day.  Brian rode into town to buy dinner.  We finally had oatmeal this morning - cold oatmeal because we still don't have fuel, but oatmeal none the less!

We started riding at 7:30 this morning and got here at the library by 10.  Wouldn't you know it's the only library we've run into so far that doesn't open until 11.  That's been our day so far.

**editor's note(10/24)**  addition to day 38's partial entry:  After finishing our business at the library, Brian and I found the groccery store and then headed to McDonald's for some cheap lunch.  We met Joe, an 87 year old who used to bicycle tour and when he saw our bikes, he was waiting outside to talk to us.  He was the cutest old man I've ever met, and we enjoyed listening to his stories while we ate our lunch.  We also decided to explore some of the shops in Morro Bay and ended up wandering into a photo gallery and talking to the photographer for quite some time. (yeah believe it or not, Brian and I were being pretty social!!)  He was interesting in our ride and told us some good free camping spots and what to expect as we head farther south.  Tomorrow we're taking a day off to go kayaking in the bay!
