Hey-- I am in Boquete, Panama! It is a tiny little green town in the middle of the mountains, sitting humbly in the shadow of the only volcano in Panama.
After a hellish two days of travelling (do NOT take Lloyd Boliviano airlines), I have come here to meet up with Tammy, one of my best friends from college. She and some of her co-workers (they all work for the Tico Times) are down here because they have the week off for Semana Santa. We are staying in a great little hostel that sleeps about 15. It is so much fun. Last night the center communal room turned into a Discoteca for a little while! That was after a great community dinner. Today a big group of about 12 or 14 of us climbed up a mountain to this crazy little park with all sorts of signs throughout saying cute little quotes or sayings. One of my favorites is a little witch who says in Spanish, "If you are too lazy to climb up on foot, you can borrow my broom." It was really a bit of a trippy place-- sort of like an adult playground with huge enormous swings that you can jump on to and have amazing views over the valley. We strolled through and just had a great time. On the way down we went through a coffee plantation. Its just so beautiful here. And the flowers are in full bloom.
Besides that we havent done too much since I arrived on Sunday evening. We have just been walking around, we went to an orchid fair, and on a great hike up another hill yesterday evening. We stumbled upon a beautiful field unexpectedly where you could see over into the next valley and they had these little green plants and when you touch them or blow on them they slowly close, like barnacles. They are called in Spanish "Morir sonando" which means "to die dreaming." I love it.
Tomorrow everybody is heading off in different directions. Tammy and I are going over to Bocas del Toro which is on the Caribbean side. We are meeting up with some more friends of Tammy´s and I will stay there through the weekend before cruising up to Nicaragua!
