The Webster campus is actually in Bellevue, which is just outside Geneva, and the town sits right on the lake and has a gorgeous view of the mountains. I’m hoping I can get another sunny, and this time less hazy, day to get more shots from the pier
Today, Thursday 21 January 2010 we went to the UN offices of Geneva. The Geneva offices are, by and large, for the humanitarian branches of the UN and for 100’s of humanitarian NGO’s. For our trip today we had a tour around the main UN building and the library and reading rooms. We then met with one of the lawyers from the Human Rights Council to discuss the activities of the council, the 4-year reviews that each state must undergo assess their human rights record, and the reform of the council from its predecessor, the Human Rights Commission which, ironically, was usually staffed by reps from states with poor human rights records. The council meets 3 times a year and their next meeting is in February where they will be hearing from the delegations from Iran, Iraq, and Egypt. I think I’m going to try to attend one of the hearings if possible. During our visit we also received our library passes so we can access the UNOG library anytime until the end of July! Just have to walk through security and show our badges and in we go! Yep, this is a big thing in my geeky existence!
So that’s really it, not much has been going on that’s worth sharing. I am going to have to psych myself up to do laundry this weekend, just dreading it, about $15 a load! Yuck.
That’s it for now
