After some more messing around on the bus we arrived in Southampton. There the Swan fan Makkum waited for us. First impression: "What?? That boat ain't that big!?" They had told us it was the biggest brigantine on earth (64m length) en that he would look very 'pirate-like'. "Yeah right..." but yes, they were right. Only not the pirates we were thinking about. Not the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' but real actual pirates. Brigantines are very fast, highly manoeuvrable and kick some serious ass out on sea! That's why pirates used these ships for their worldwide known dirty work.
We had to throw all our baggage (not that much but some of those girls did not need what they were making us carry) on board. Already at this point you could see who where the workers and who was specialised in watching others work. No problem thou, we were all still very happy and tolerated anything from everyone.
We got a quick tour of the ship and that was all for the first evening on board. That night we were free to do anything. Next morning we would get started on our job of sailing the ship, for now we just had to sit back, relax and watch the main, Dutch crew (10 people) prep the ship and sail it out of the harbour. So that night the ship sailed out in direction of Spain, A Coruņa, were the race would start. These first days were our days of practice. And this was our first night on board. First thing the next morning our practice days would start. The first people were already getting sea sick, not yet even being at sea :)
Our adventure had officially started.
