We had an incredibly slow start to the day and didn't really get up and moving out of the motel room until after 10, however it was wonderful to take our time and do a whole lot of nothing in the first part of the day. That said, it wasn't too long until the old wanderlust kicked in and we were dressed and ready to go and explore Chicago. There is so much to see and do and we had had a difficult time the night before trying to figure out our priorities. But, we jumped into Odie and spent over an hour fighting traffic (at 11am on a Sunday morning!!!) on our way into the city (our motel is about 20 miles west of Chicago) until we finally arrived at the Museum of Science and Industry and parked in the underground garage. We then spent the better part of the next three hours touching, staring, exploring and thoroughly enjoying all of the wonderful exhibits. One of the highlights was the amazing and expansive model train set that took nearly 5 minutes to just walk around the outside of!!! We also enjoyed the movie in the Omnimax theater; a huge half dome where the picture is projected on this half dome and is so large and expansive that you simply can't see it all at once
After this extensive and informative museum, we headed out to explore the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere; the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. This is a 110 story building and, after waiting in line for over an hour, passing through metal detectors and a security checkpoint, buying our tickets and then waiting to catch a ride to the top in a giant elevator, we finally came out onto the 103rd floor. Here we walked around and looked at the view on all sides of the building. On a clear day, you can see 4 states from this height. The final excitement was walking out into the completely clear glass room that extends over the side of the building. We all walked out a bit slowly and shakily, Jess was the shakiest, and took some photos and then quickly scampered back inside. We then made our way back to our room, had dinner and relaxed. There is more to see and do tomorrow.
