After another comfortable night's sleep in the hotel beds, we decided to take ourselves out for a treat in the morning and introduced the kids to the International House of Pancakes (known locally as IHOP). Jess had an omelette, Tim a sampler platter of different breakfast meats with hash browns, eggs and pancakes and the kids each had a "Decorate-a-face Pancake".This was a large pancake that came with strawberries for eyes, butter for a nose and banana slices for a mouth. As well, there was a sleeve of yoghurt that they were able to spread around the pancake for hair and beards, etc... It was a great treat for the kids and a fun and relaxing way to start the day.
Then we loaded into Odie and went in search of a car wash and vacuum. Odie has been working really hard to get us all around the country and it was time to clean her up a bit. Then we went to Barnes & Noble Bookstore and loaded up the kids with new books to read. After picking 5 books each, we were on our way to Old Town Albuquerque and The American International Rattlesnake Museum. Eli, Tim and Lily, especially Eli, cruised around the museum and looked at all of the different snakes, lizards, and scorpions that were on display. Jess lasted all of 5 minutes and then had to leave and go outside as she was "finding it a bit hot." We suspect that the close proximity to all of these reptiles was too much for her and she had "to GET OUT". There are certainly many more species of rattlesnakes than I ever expected there to be!
Then we walked around the cute and historic little town square, perused the different shops and got ice cream and iced coffee and tea. It was a lovely little square and had a comfortable feel to it. There were street vendors along one sidewalk and lots of tourists enjoying the sunny weather and southwestern atmosphere.
We enjoyed our time there and by early afternoon we were ready to go back to the hotel and enjoy a mid-afternoon siesta. We rested in the cool room, wrote postcards, Tim napped and generally worked extremely hard at simply relaxing! Then, after the weather began to cool down, we ventured back out to REI (a very trendy and diverse outdoor store) and did a little shopping. Then it was back to our favourite grocery store, Trader Joe's for more supplies and back to the hotel for franks and beans and broccoli for dinner.
