Well, the grand day finally arrived. Tim and Jess tossed and turned for most of the night and woke up and got out of bed to a beautiful morning. The gear was by the back door and ready to load into the Odyssey. When it was all packed up, KaMate demanded a picture of him sitting on top of everything!
We hit the road and along the way we passed the New Haven Rowing Club, where Jess used to row when she lived in Connecticut. We travelled down through New York State, across the Tappan Zee bridge and into New Jersey. We stopped in New Jersey for a lunch on the side of the interstate, leftover pizza, what a treat!
Then it was down over the Delaware Memorial Bridge and into Maryland. We tried to stop in each state to get a souvenir magnet. When it proved quite difficult to get one for every state, Jess looked on the good 'ol internet and found a package deal for the magnets shaped like each state. We will just keep track of which states we go to and do a bulk order at the end of the summer.
We made it to Patapsco Valley State Park just before 4pm, and in time to check-in before the ranger station closed at 4. We signed our lives away (at least according to the form we had to read and sign before we were given a camping permit), were given detailed descriptions of what speed to go, which roads to follow, which rules applied.....the list went on. At least we managed to spot some whitetail deer on the road to our campsite.
Just as we parked the car, the rain started?!?!?!?!? Working as a team we managed to pitch the tent, wipe the floor dry from the rain that fell through as we pitched the tent, moved all of our stuff inside, and settled in. The rain stopped long enough to go for a short walk and then back into the tent for dinner and relaxing. Lily helped Tim to make quesadillas and rice pilaf, she is dead keen to learn how to cook. Into bed and all fell asleep. Shortly later we were woken by the driving rain and a bit of a scramble to move the items from the screen room into the tent as the driving rain was no longer nicely falling straight down but instead had started to move sideways. We did stay relatively dry and had a nice sleep. Up at 6am and packed and on the road by 7am.

More adventures to follow no doubt!

Too bad about the rain, but the "palace" looks like it could stand up to the weather. I hope that you have a great time in Washington and am looking forward to seeing blog entry #20! Love, Gramma
