Where I stayed
Deep in the Heart of Texas
I have known Linda since 1973, although we have only seen each other once since then. She came down to visit her brother - our favorite Bay area tile salesman/Italian wine connoisseur /college buddy Chris - at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., where we would have many visitors as you can imagine. "Rolly Colly" is a small private school, but back then was ranked as the 6th best "party school" in the nation, which partially explains some of my shortcomings.
Our motto was "lays, rays and jays", but our intense studies prevented Chris and I from participating in one of the three. Linda brought out some great old photos that brought back memories that I presumed had been lost along with those many brain cells.
Linda's husband Dave has an architectural firm and is very involved in (envisioned, initiated & designed) a major urban trail project, known as the Trinity Strand, that has been in the development stage for about 11 years and is now beginning to show progress. Their house, which he designed, sits on a downtown bluff overlooking the entrance to the American Airlines Arena, home of the Mavericks and Stars. Their house is walking distance to the Dallas Museum of Art, where I viewed a Chagall exhibit and a classic Greek sculpture exhibit. I'm pretty sure ole Marc was dabbling in some psychedelics while dabbling in his paints. And what's with all the goats?
Downtown Dallas and all of the construction gave another indication that the economy is healing. There were quite a few cranes on the city horizon and two large condo/apt buildings going up right next door to Dave and Linda's.
Their backyard opens onto the Katy Trail, a very popular rails - to - trails project that will eventually connect to the Trinity Strand. Dallas wants to become the most hiker/biker friendly city in the nation I hiked about 5 miles in the 90/90 heat/humidity and then was rewarded with a cold beer at the Katy Trail Ice House, where giant fans blow mist over the chairs and tables just off the trail. They boast the distinction of having sold more beer than any other bar in Texas or Dallas or something, but with that much sweat walking/running/biking by, I'm sure they do very well. Linda and Dave also fit a familiar mold of many of our friends along our travels - they love animals - and have 3 dogs and 2 cats, all rescues. Mary and I were particularly enamored with Jill, a smaller dog of unknown origin, who was blind and yet negotiated 2 flights of stairs with no problem. (which strangely enough reminded me of some of our friends from Trav's.)
Dave has yet another credential - you guessed it - he's a gourmet chef. Imagine that. I would never try to rate the quality of meals we have had prepared for us on this journey - they have all been fantastic - but I might have to give Dave the nod for creativity, presentation and passion. This guy loves to cook, and 90 % of his creations are done on his " Binford 9000 " gas grill out on the deck, even breakfasts. Once again we were treated like royalty and have vowed to return for a longer stay, if they'll have us.
