Next day we picked up the car and hit the road, we had quite a few kilometers to cover. The plan was to see as many sights as visit as many pubs as possible along the way between Darwin and Alice Springs. Naturally our first stop was in a little town called Noonamah for a quick pub grub lunch and beer. Then we headed to Litchfield National Park. On the way into the park we stopped at Magnetic Termite Mounds. Here there are towering columns of dirt that are nests built by termites. Apparently the termites saliva makes the soil as hard as a rock. Very odd indeed!!

Not only is January the hottest time of year, but it is also the rainy season. Makes for not always the best weather, but definitely the best waterfalls, and Litchfield had plenty of them!! We could swim in some, but others had warning signs that crocodiles may be present. We decided it would be best not to risk it, but the pool did look quite tempting.

After leaving Litchfield we stopped in another little one pub town, Humpty Doo, for dinner and a few drinks on the way to Kakadu.

We had also learned as we were touring around Darwin that this part of the world gets more lightening strikes than anywhere else on Earth. Driving from Litchfield to Kakadu we got to experience it. I have never seen so much lightening in one place in all my life, in every direction and at intervals so close that it was hard to believe. It was so impressive we stopped the car to just get out and watch. The video I took doesn't come close to capturing it, but at least it gives you some idea.

We arrived late at Kakadu National Park only to find there were no cheap rooms, or even somewhat reasonable rooms so we decided to rough it and sleep in the car. Not the most comfortable night to say the least, but we figured we could splurge later on and have a nice dinner at the rock.
