The windy journey up here took only 3 hours but was tough, on Clare as we had to stop twice to err - decorate the side of the road. Poor girl has had a funny tummy since we arrived. She is being very brave though and soldiering on. I have been buying her plenty of trinkets and shawls to cheer her up. Actually we have pooled our money together so it is all mixed up who buys what. I always carry the cash though so just hang about the stalls until she decides and then I start the bargaining.

Mussorie is 6000 feet up and pure luxury compared to what we've encountered so far. We are staying in a virtual palace with views all the way down the valley for only about $11 NZ. It is a place Indian honeymooners come and it 's easy to see why. Heavenly quiet.

This is not a holy town though so liquor and meat is available, plus the video games and many other Western pleasures. The big plus side is that it's clean here. Rubbish bins line the streets and no plastic dumping signs are all around. In Rishikesh there seems to be no town planning and rubbish is simply dumped near the bridges very close to the river.

Today we had a beautiful sleep in, then made our way by cycle Rickshaw to the cable car in order to get to the highest point. It was a rickety old thing which creaked and groaned but made it to the top. Brrr, darn chilly up there. We found a little rest area in the sun behind the wind then met a French family on holiday and had a good hours chat. They informed us all about going to the Taj Mahal. Then they left and an English chap came by which we've spent he last little while wandering about with. Clare had bought 4 more Shawls which were rather fetching. As it's off season we can get decent discounts. Finally health and vitality seems to be returning to her and the general malaise is wearing off. We are planning a very long mountain drive tomorrow to Shimla to fingers crosses she makes it in okay.

Until then..

Bliss
Your latest entry sounds blissful (apart from poor Clare decorating the side of the road). Did you find this place during your last visit? This place sounds like somewhere even I would like - which is saying a lot.

It sounds as though you are Clare's bargaining knight in hemp clothing! It's quite sweet actually reading about it. I'm glad things are going well for you both.

Take care,
Frances
