Where I stayed
Chez nous - an Oasis in the snow

Flag of Canada  , Ontario,
Friday, February 15, 2008

We had to cancel our trip to the Andes due to (mea culpa) one of us not
checking the flight times well enough and another of us (distinctively
different from the first person) didn't want the adventure of hoping
the tour would end on time, get us back to the hotel on time, allow us
to shave, shower and soap; pack, plan and placate, confirm, check,
re-check be ready.

Needless to say the plane was held up by
mechanical problems; being Air Canada, we were told nothing. Being Air
Canada, there were no ground crew, no AC lounge, no supervisors, no
staff, nothing, nada - the usual sort of Air Canada customer service.
Fortunately we had a Canadian tour group with us which had done the
Cape Horn boat cruise AND their fearless whippersnapper of a leader did
just about everything one could to get into the faces of anyone whom
looked like they could be an Air Canada rep in disguise or have some
method directly or indirectly contacting ANYONE in Air Canada (anywhere
in the world) and make his presence felt. So, the first indication that
we should unpack pillows and blankets came from him as we all became
aware that the next day (Valentine's day) would be upon us before a
relief plane would arrive. At that point, most of had been at the
airport for the prescribed five hours and were holding, hungry and
hallucinating. You know the kind where wives look at their husbands and
see Knights in shining armor who will rescue them from this dastardly,
devastating, devious, delay of the divisive airline of Canada. (For
those not in the know - Air Canada is solely responsible for all
divisive elements in Canada including idealogical differences, language
issues, political scandals and rotten relations with German businessmen
in Denmark or something like that.

Anyway despite Air Canada
Management's desperate attempt to get worse and worse in every flight
they offer as a 'service' to its 'customers', the staff on board were
wonderful and it makes one wonder why such rotten management can keep
such good people.

The photos attached show the weather we came
to. We are thinking of putting a Christmas tree up and celebrate Xmas
2008 ahead of time.

What a great holiday. I will be transferring notes I took by hand, into the blog pages over the next couple of weeks. So, as I said above:  this is what we woke up to the morning after we arrived:
1. The snow just kept on coming down followed by ice rain on the weekend.
2. "Winterfest" our annual winter carnival ended  Sunday, February 17th, 2008.
3. Ice-cycles hung from gutters like bicycles from Spanish shutters
4. The snow drifts became more than a 'toke'(n) high
5. Ottawa neared or set records for snow in a day, week, season, accumulated. Most hits, runs batted in, intentional walks and illegal substitutions.
