We got a lift to the airport with Marco from Peru Star Apartments and he gave me a running commentary along the way of all of the rough neighborhoods that line the road to the airport and of the efforts that have been made to clean them up. By all accounts Lima was a pretty dodgy place 20 years or so ago but it is getting much better now. Certainly the areas we went to seemed perfectly safe to us.
Our American Airways flight turned out to be a LAN code share and I have to say LAN were very cavalier about telling us that there was a 2+ hour delay. At least they fed us though.
After a five or so hour flight we landed in Miami and made it through customs remarkably quickly. But it took ages to get to the car rental centre and so we didn't get underway until after 9pm. I upgraded the car to a Nissan Murreno (small SUV) because of our luggage.
The one hour drive to Key Largo was largely uneventful thanks to great navigation from Jess. Sadly, because it was dark we couldn't see much. Checked into the Hampton Inn effortlessly and had a good sleep in a comfy bed.
We didn't really get to appreciate Key Largo as much I would have liked but I think the romance of Bogart and Bacall is long gone.
