Greetings from Palermo, Sicily.
We arrived in Palermo Thursday afternoon after we both crashed out on the flight from Rome (9 hour time change is catching up).  We awoke from our snooze by the bumpy ride and landing very close to the water, like when you fly into Oakland.  Being on a plane that looked like an old Southwest plane, it made us a little concerned until we looked at the other side of the plane and saw land.  We hoped on the bus to the city center and were dropped off a few blocks from our hotel.  Megan and I have viewed the area around our hotel on Google street view, so everything looked familiar and finding our B&B was easy.  Our host Angela knows this city inside and out and gave us a great recommendation for our anniversary dinner.
We decided to try the local specialty, sardines and pasta, followed by a piece of sword fish topped with tomatoes and capers.  We finished off with the salad last, fresh tomatoes and buffalo mozzarella.  Towards the end of dinner both of us were falling asleep and headed B&B.
Today we did a walking tour, checking out fountains, churches and street markets.  We wondered the small alleys, taking pictures and seeing the city.  We toured the national theater, the third largest in Europe and where scenes from God Father III were shot.
We have both been impressed with city so far,  in that our guide book (LP) described it as gritty and rough.  When we were in India last year, we visited a town LP described as a lovely colonial city with tree lined streets.  The place was horrible and that is when we realized that everyone's perception is different.  So when we heard gritty, we braced ourselves but the place is not bad at all.  No mafia shoot outs on street corners.  Nice buildings, great food and friendly people.  Tomorrow we leave for Erice, a mid-evil hill town on the western edge of Sicily.
