We left San Diego at 6:30AM on Wednesday September 1, arriving in Rome at 8:30AM September 2.  Our next flight was a domestic flight to Palermo, Sicily at 3:30PM.  We found an ancient Roman city near by called Ostia Antica.  We dropped our bags at the left luggage, hopped in cab and were there in 20 minutes.  The site was huge, described as similar to Pompeii without the people.  Ostia Antica was the harbor for ancient Rome.  It consists of old warehouses, an amphitheater and various stores.  We wondered around the ruins not seeing any other tourists, taking pictures and viewing the large well preserved mosaics.  After wondering around and looking at roofless buildings, we walked to the near by village for some food.  After a quick lunch of pizza, we hopped on the local bus back to the airport.  We think we were supposed to buy a ticket at the local tobacco shop but were not sure, when we boarded and we attempted to pay the driver he waved us on.  We noticed a validation machine near the front but since we did not have a ticket to punch we just sat down.  The free bus ride back was nice, it helped average our 20 Euro cab ride to the site.  Back at the airport, quick check in and off to Palermo, Sicily.
Our plan is to stay in Palermo for two nights, then to Trapani (western Sicily) for a night, then fly to Bari, Puglia.  Once we arrive in Bari we will pick up our rental car and cruise Puglia.  We do not have any plans or reservations until September 13 when we will be staying in a small town call Pacentro.
We were found Pacentro because we wanted a small town closer to Rome the day before we return the rental car.  We found the town by zooming in on Google maps, it looked like a small hill town in the state of Abruzzo.  We saw pictures of the town on Google images but could not find any mention in the Lonely Planet guide or much on the Internet.  We read on Wikipedia that there is a club in Detroit for people from Pacentro.  We found their web page and we sent a generic email to 15 of the members.  One lady replied to us and put us in touch with her cousin Carmine who runs a B&B there.  We will be staying with her family the night before we head to Rome.  We are off to Palermo and we will update from there soon.
