The day started out with a visit to Mt. Rushmore. It is truly amazing how Gutzon Borglum was able to create this wonderful sculpture. Not only did I enjoy seeing the sculpture in person, but the history behind it was also interesting. Did you know that over 90% of Mount Rushmore was carved by using dynamite? I even got to push the plunger and hear the sounds of the dynamite blasting the rock away. I might be old....... but young at heart.
My next stop was Crazy Horse Memorial. No, it's not done yet. There is a lot of other things there to see when you visit. A lot of interesting facts and artifacts of the Native American Indians. I hope they finish it before I die. I would like to see it.
I then made my way through the Black Hills toward Deadwood. The Black Hills are a beautiful site to behold. If it did not get so cold in the winter, I would live there.
Deadwood is a historic western town with lots of casinos inside the old buildings. I went to the Mount Moriah Cemetery where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried. At the cemetery is a overlook where you can see the entire town and the hills that surround it. I did not do any gambling there........ saving that for Reno.
Next stop....... Devil's Tower. WOW
The rest of my day was spent driving into Wyoming where they decided to detour me because of fires on route 14. That was one heck of a detour. Took be through the Big Horn Mountains. The roads are steep and very curvy. It had gotten dark when I had to go through them and the wildlife was out feeding and hanging out on the side of the road. Needless to say, I had to go slower then what the speed limit told me I could go.
Finally landed in Lovell where I have gotten a room and plan on a good nights rest before going to Yellowstone.
