Wednesday, April 24 -  This was a lazy morning for us waking up in Sam's Town RV park to a beautiful day with the temperature only 75 degrees.   George liked this park and said he would not mind returning to this park – safe, people friendly, food is cheap, shows are reasonable and the casino here is very nice.

Headed for Main Street Station Casino/Hotel/RV park in the old downtown of Vegas.  The park is across from the casino and I did review it below.  The casino was very quaint with trains still roaring by the old station.  Inside the old décor is stunning with a long wood bar and old slot machines on display.  The park is walking distance to the old historic district so that you can experience the Fremont experience.

The Fremont Street Experience is a five block stretch of Fremont St. which encases the original casino row nicknamed "Glitter Gulch".  This is the old Vegas with smaller casinos and a pedestrian only gambling mall.  Some of the old casinos aren’t even casinos anymore or don’t have the hotel part.   At dusk to midnight a 90 foot canopy covers about four blocks where more than 12.5 million, LED lights and half-million watt sound system combine for an  immersion extravaganza known as “Vista Vision”.    The lights and music are synchronized to music from famous bands like Kiss or the Doors.   Tourists grab a drink and sit, stand or stroll through this marketplace enjoying music, sidewalk artists and street performers.   Stilt walkers, showgirls, go-go dancers, Impersonators all walk the streets.

We went during the day to see the casinos especially the Golden Nugget where my parents took me in 1955.  This casino has a great pool with a shark tank and gambling around the sides.  Interesting “people watching” throughout this historic district.  This country is in debt but you would not know that being here – on a Wednesday it was crowded and gambling starts in the early morning but everything is open 24-7.  The Pioneer Casino sign is still up but there is no Casino and the old mob casino the Binion’s Gambling Hall and Hotel where mob figures battled with unions, the Nevada Gaming Commission and IRS raids is still here.  This was a family run casino with high limit tables and the start of the World Series of Poker which now is at the RIO.  In 2009 the hotel rooms were closed but the casino is still opened.

We ate the buffet at the Main Street Station Casino and it is rated the top one in this area.  It was very good at the Crystal Garden which was the original train station here.  A train even went by while we were eating.  Enjoyed our afternoon and headed back at night to the Fremont Experience to catch the festivities there.  The light show was interesting and do the tourists come in to see it.  Heard Elvis sing again!

Heading north to the Valley of Fire State Park in NV tomorrow night before we drive back into AZ to get to Utah where we will begin camping at state and national parks in southern part of the state.   We are excited to be in that region of the country again and hope it is not too hot!

Wednesday, April 24 – Main Street Station Casino/Hotel/ RV Park.   This park is across the street from the Casino and it is a good idea to have reservations.  You call the main number and make your reservations through the hotel.  It is hard to find information about the park online through their website,so read the park reviews on rvparkreviews.com to help you.  Sites are right next to each other in a parking lot that is secure with security making their rounds in cars and bikes.  It costs us $16 for a full hookup site (even though our sewer did not work).  There is a bathhouse and you will get at registration keys for the bathhouse and laundry.  They advise that about two hours before you arrive that you call the main number and say you are coming in so that you get a site number first.   Once you are all set up you cross the street to the Main Casino/Hotel and register.  Pull through sites are more expensive.  Driving in- there is a dip that can scrape the back of your RV so take it slow.  This was a one night stop for us and we enjoyed being in old Vegas.  You can walk to the historic district and experience the light show and market place during the day and at night.  There are restaurants, shows and old casinos to enjoy like the original Golden Nugget.  Enjoyed our stay.  There are shuttles if you want to head to the strip.
