Where I stayed
East Timor Backpackers .....
Timor Leste (East Timor), independent since I guess 2002, the youngest nation in Asia, and at the same time the poorest nation. Since long time this was kind of a dream to go here, now it is possible. Most people asked me why and what I can see there. In fact in Timor Leste has not many sightseeing spots, and if you find something it is very much broken. But ... it has charme. Timor Leste is normal, not touristically organized. Travelling in Timor Leste means travelling like the locals. Of course I support developement, and it is highly necessary in Timor Leste, but still everybody can experience the nature of an low developed country without focus on tourist.
Dili, the capital, it small with around 130000 inhabitants. Every place can be reached by foot, or for a buck or two by taxi. It has markets and small shops, a very long corniche and some city beaches.
Nearby, around 8 km east of town, are the White Sand Beach, the Cristo Rei statue, and with a little 15 minutes walk behind the statue the Behind Jesus Beach.
If you ever considered to visit a new born country, go there now. The poeple welcome you with their heart.
