Safed, Israel

Day 15
Haifa/Zafat, Isreal
4/20/09

Today is Holocaust Memorial day! We are driving to Zafat and will drive through Akko and Haifa. First we go to Haifa, in Haifa we go to the Baha'i Shrine & Gardens. The Baha'i gardens are in honor of the originator of the Baha'i faith, Bab, the Baha'i faith is where you think Jesus, Moses. Mohammed, A'li, and God, but they are more like Christian scientists. It's a confusing religion to explain ask someone else. But the gardens were gorgeous. Now we are on our way to Zafat. In Zafat we get lost! Typical we now have a tradition go around each town you get to 3 times any more you are really lost any less you shouldn't be that good at reading maps. All around the city there are Jewish and Muslim people they are ALL Jewish and Muslim. It was so weird all the women wore wigs, long skirts, and did not show any skin. All the men wear side locks and black clothing. Same with the kids everything was the same. Once we got to our room that was down 4 flights of stairs. Jewish/American/rainbow gathering hippies/ young philosophers greet us. Interesting mix! Well there names are Zaharyia, Ari, and Mordechei. We get to our room and get ready for dinner. We get falafel and French fries from some street market place then we go to the holocaust Memorial service in there I guess center for the arts. Its was so aw-inspiring, first the Rabbi spoke for a while in Hebrew about the Holocaust, than the towns holocaust survivors come up with there families and the children say a little something (I am crying by now) then two teenagers come and sing a song together. If you have seen camp rock its like the ending song where the Demi Lavato is singing then Joe Jonas (I think) starts singing and its really cheesy well that's what it was like except in Hebrew. Then the community children chorus comes out and sings it was really cute. Now we watch part of Schindler's list which is about the holocaust and during it some other kids where doing a pantomime in silhouette. Then we Sang Hatikvah which is there national anthem and I sing in Hebrew camp. Then we go home.

Very touching...
What a wonderful and valuable experience. It's a relief to see some good come out of such a tragedy. Thank you for sharing.
