Day 11
Mykonos, Greece
4/16/09

We took a boat to Delos. Which was (for a thousand years) the center of the
Greek civilization. Here was were -for the main part- the Delian leagues kept all of there money. Also it is where they met. Did you know that 10,000 slaves a day were sold and traded in Delos? Delos was also host, every four years, to the Delian games. We also walked through the Avenue of the Lions, which you can see in the pictures. Myth says that Delos was created when.......

Zeus fell in love with gentle Leto, the Titaness, who became pregnant. When Hera discovered this infidelity, she forbade Mother Earth to give Leto refuge and ordered the Python to pursue her. Finally Poseidon, taking pity on her, anchored the poor floating island of Delos with for diamond columns to give her a place to rest. Leto gave birth first to the virgin huntress Artemis on Rhenea and then, clasping a sacred palm on a slope of Delos's Mt. Kynthos, to Apollo, god of music and light.
-Fodor's Greece travel book

I though that was really interesting. Delos is a really barren land its only rock and shrubs, except it has beautiful wild flowers. There was a giant statue in one of the buildings on Delos. Parts of this statue were excavated and a section of its foot is in the British museum and part of a hand is in the Delos museum, because for a while Britain owned a lot of countries so both Greece and Britain got some of the statue.
