We spent a few days at Darren's family's cabin near Nederland, Colorado with Darren's brother, sister-in-law, and two nephews.  Time at the cabin was spent hanging out with the park neighbors and celebrating Darren's mom's birthday with a night out for pizza.  We also got a chance to do a couple acclimation hikes to prepare for our attempt at summitting Longs Peak.

Longs Peak, at 14,255 feet above sea level, is the 15th highest peak in Colorado and the 48th highest peak in North America.  Darren had summitted twice previously with his brother but Kristi wanted a shot at the summit so we planned our hike for August 11.  Darren's high school friend Jon accompanied us on the hike and was great to have along the trek.

We started the hike at 3AM and reached the summit around 9:15AM after hiking a little over seven tough miles and gaining almost 5,000 feet in elevation.  We were all excited and relieved to summit so we snapped a few photos, enjoyed the view and some snacks, and signed the summit log before heading back down the mountain.  We reached the starting trail head about 4PM with sore feet, back, and knees.  It was quite a hike...so we all enjoyed a celebratory Coca-Cola.
