I never considered the 'performance' of my wardrobe until I began to prepare for my four month stint in South America. Now I have to consider durability, packability, breathability, flexibility. In fact some of my clothing is so wondrously competent in it's 'abilities' it has left me feeling rather inept by comparison. Packability has to be the most alluring of all these adjectives however.

If an onlooker to were to compare my seemingly endless list to the size of my rucksack they might think me to have a case of mistaken identity. I after all am Ruth Perrin not Mary Poppins and some of the stuff that woman pulled out of that bag of hers, let's just say Mary Poppins is rather an expert in packing a bag, I am not.

Getting ready is the hardest job of all I suspect. Giving myself four weeks to learn a smattering of spanish and a dash of portugese I feel may have been rather over-ambitious but nonetheless I shall give it a try. Afterall I managed to pass a German GCSE with a minimal amount of effort when I was 15 so my innate ability for language acquisition may just kick in and save the day.

But despite worrying about currencies and money and malaria and languages and packability I feel happy. For the first time in a long time I am doing something in my life which feels right rather than expected.
