0700h in the hotellobby in the Crown Plaza in Madison. Again the best weather. De Icing the airplane with brushes, fueling the airplane and getting the necessary charts at the FBO. Unforunately the weather ahead of us seems not to be so nice. Showers of snow and low clouds thats not what a single engine aircrafts is made for.
Initially the goal is to stop at Syracuse and then continue ahead to Bangor, Maine.
After the take off we climb to 9500ft. Just some strato cumulus from time to time but always weather to continue under visual conditions. For the first part. After a few hours of flight and my back hurting I decided for a pit stop at a place called Flint (KFLT). We are flying on top but through some holes in the cloud layers we manage to descend and continue visually for runway 36 in Flint. Enroute we recieved the weather from the local FSS (Flight Service Station) which made us unsure about the landing in Syracuse (KSYR). Snowshowers and low clouds.
We decided for either Glenn Falls (KGFL) or Lebanon (KLEB) since the actual weather was better.
Another 3.5 hours of flight ahead of us. We decided to print IFR charts from the internet (For free in the U.S). This will allow us to always join IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) if needed. Unfortunately the HP ink printer is about 112 years old and it takes for ever. Up we go. Runway 36 and direction east. Hmmm...since it took us so long to prepare the flight i forgot one impirtant thing, pilot...never miss a bathroom. Not even ten minutes in the air and I can feel a certain urge. The fight starts. After take off some big snowy clouds down to the ground. Diverting our route towarts Detroit helps. We decide to climb again and at 10500ft and later again 9500ft we are heading towards the Canadian border. We can see Toronto and suddenly I realize that the Niagara Falls can't be far off our route. Even better, we fly exactly over them. Talking to Niagara Approach we are allowed to descend over the Falls and we manage to take some beautiful pictures. Wow. We continue towards the east with the goal to land at Lebanon. I need a toilet. Glenn Falls is the closer airport. So I decided that if the weather allows us to descend below the clouds I will fly visually into Glenn Falls and run for the toilet. Lucky me I managed. Low clouds white mountain tops, amazing but we land. We continue towards Bangor. Lufthansa 423 just took off at Boston I guess and we are on our way on top of the cloud layer again. The layer is not thik so we are sure we can brake trhough the clouds at any time. Approaching Bangor this was not the case, so we ask for IFR vectors to brake through the clouds. Flying over here is just so much easier. ATC is great. Breaking trough the clouds at 3000ft we land just shortly before sunset. Cool. We are in Bangor.
