After an absolutely stunning drive down from the national park to Arica, it was an organization evening of research for Patagonia and the next part of the trip.
The flight was very early, so taking off from Arica just had the red hues in the distance, which were great but I could tell the view below was amazing. Drifting off to sleep, whenever I woke up, another massive mountain was on the horizon. As the sun came up, the desert below looked stark and very haunting, definitely will have to check it out later on! Arriving into Santiago, the view was perfect, Aconcagua, the highest in the Andes and at 7km one of the highest in the world, looked just amazing and very close to Santiago even though it's in Argentina.
On arrival took a bus to Valparaiso and at a random hostel. The city seems to have attitude, great graffiti and a riot of colourful buildings up he hills all around it.
The climate is very Mediterranean and I love it, its got 'tude. A mix between Sydneys shonky infrastructure on gorgeous coastal roads, Lisbons crumbling fun and San Frans bohemian hilliness and a lot of chaos, its got the right attitude towards graffiti, encouraging some awesome street paint and much fewer tags than elsewhere.
First day involved organizing my tour South through Patagonia. Once done, I went for a run through the cerros, the hills above the city with an amazing mix of slum and mansion. Great light for sunset and the really cool graffiti couldn't be matched for funky city vibe. I can see why it's world heritage listed! Out partying till late at a lack bar, loved it!
In the morning I changed to a nicer hostel and went out to the beach of the city. Damn it was super cold, like 14 or less! That evening out with some Argentians I met and checked out some other bars.
Next day was a long lunch before busing to Santiago to meet the tour group for the Patagonia trip.
