Arriving into Arequipa at 3am, we checked into our hostel when another group were checking out. A bit skanky but with an amazing view from the roof of the large convent in the middle of town.
The morning view of the huge mountains and volcano was impressive. What gave the town a great cozy feel was the white / grey stone walls everywhere and the large date palms coming out from them.
It gave a sense of North Africa or Southern Spain with the bright clear skies and almost Moorish architecture and certainly a Mediterranean climate as it's sunny 360 days a year here!
The morning was spent organizing flights and checking out some of the old town and trying to plan how to check out Colco Canyon, the deepest in the world. We ultimately planned for the 3am departure on a 6 hour journey to start walking.
The first day we passed the highest point in the road around 5.30am with a stunning view of the mountains around. The walk involved descending 1.2km into the canyon and having lunch close to the river in a very cute restaurant. Then another few hours walking though some old towns before arriving at a very cute oasis town with lots of pools deep in the canyon.  That night involved sleeping under the stars for the first time, dragging the mattress out onto the grass.
The next day started at 5am, and without breakfast acsended about 1km in 2 hours, getting to the top for when the sun just arrived on that part of the mountain.  Had hot spring that were a little too hot but good for the muscles and then a big buffet meal before heading back to Arequipa.  After some faffing getting the pictures from my camera to Roger and  Sasīs card, we went out with the group and also randomly met Tom and Morgan from the Machu Pichu trail. Great night out before heading straight from the club to the bus station, I didnt quite get back in time to see Rog and Sas off as they returned to Denver. The bus was the usual affair, off to Arica in Chile!
